Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 is about to premiere this month, the second season for the show without the beloved Dr. “McDreamy”.
Actor Patrick Dempsey, who played Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd, opened up about the details surrounding his exit in the hit ABC show. Dempsey revealed that his character’s departure was a mutual decision between him and showrunner Shonda Rhimes.
Up until now, fans of the medical drama are still mourning the tragic death of Derek in a car crash. Many slammed ABC and Rhines for killing off the character. Dempsey played the role for 11 years. He was among the original cast of Grey’s Anatomy along with Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) and Justin Chambers (Dr. Alex Karev).
Dempsey confessed that he stayed in the show a bit longer than he should have. The actor revealed that he and Rhimes had discussed his departure and they agreed to keep it a secret. “I knew he was going to be gone, but I didn’t know how she was going to handle it. Shonda just said, ‘I’m going to do it in a really good way,’ and she did her thing,” the actor told People magazine.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly after his Grey’s Anatomy exit last year, Dempsey became emotional. At the time, he cited that the grueling schedule of the show has finally caught up with him. He added that he simply wanted to try something new and different.
Dempsey seems to have moved on from his Derek Shepherd’s death. He is now busy promoting his forthcoming movie Bridget Jones’s Baby alongside Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth. The movie will hit theaters on Sept. 16.
Meanwhile, more romantic and “hot” scenes are coming when Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 returns later this month. Owen and Amelia will have their honeymoon. Meredith will be involved with Nathan Riggs while reconciliation between Jackson and April is also expected.
