“The Great British Bake Off”, often referred to as Bake Off or GBBO, is one of the most popular series currently. Attracting millions of foodies all over the globe, the show has garnered a heap of praises.
However, despite its vast popularity, there is a revelation by the BBC bosses that may upset fans of the show. The future of “The Great British Bake Off” is now uncertain due to financial constraint. Will that lead to a cancellation?
The BBC chiefs have expressed that they do not have enough resources to keep The Great British Bake Off. Many relevant sources, on the other hand, say the baking show would be switching to ITV. Report last year revealed that the show was a hit among the audience. More than 13 million viewers watched it. However, “The Great British Bake Off” is in the middle of a bidding war between the channels. It happened because the BBC’s current three-year contract with Love Productions expires this year.
Meanwhile, creators of the show have reportedly set a huge price tag for rights to the popular baking series. Sources say that the value is £20 million (A$35,482,000.00). Is it wise for BBC to let such a popular show go just like that?
The breakdown has made it easier, especially for ITV, to take hold of the show. Alongside ITV, Channel 4 and Sky are swooping in to screen “The Great British Bake Off.”
In April, an insider revealed to The Sun:
“It’s no surprise all the broadcasters want a chance at landing Bake Off. It really would be a fantastic fit for Channel 4.”
The show hosts Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry are two prominent names associated with the show’s massive success right from its inception in 2010, reports the newspaper. While Hollywood is an English baker and celebrity chef, Berry is a British food writer and television presenter.
Berry recently said that she has no intentions of taking a retirement from baking or GBBO anytime soon.
In her words:
“There is plenty of time to rest in heaven. To be honest I’ve been surprised by the success of the Great British Bake Off – we even beat the football in popularity which I was particularly pleased about.”
We hope to see the ultimate decision for The Great British Bake Off soon.
