Your next destination to travel should be Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has been voted the No. 1 Best Place to Visit in the World by the U.S. News & World Report in its 2016-2017 rankings released on June 28.
Ranking in second place is Paris. Despite the recent worrisome news from the famous city, Paris is still one of the best places to visit, mainly because of its historical landmarks and culture.
Bora Bora in French Polynesia comes in third. The top 5 also include Florence, Italy, ranking fourth and Tokyo, Japan, ranking fifth.
The rankings are based on combined opinions of travellers and experts. More than 250 travel destinations were evaluated for this year’s ranking.
“Whether you are seeking an adventure far from home or planning an inexpensive weekend getaway, the destinations on our list are highly recommended by seasoned travellers and industry experts,” points out Erin Shields, the travel editor for U.S. News & World Report. “These must-see spots across the globe are praised for their beauty and infinite attractions.”
In spite of the good news, the Great Barrier Reef is facing threat from coal mining activities , according to a recent report released by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The Grand Canyon National Park is also at the brink of destruction due to unstable water use.
The Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies also announced on May 30 that mass coral bleaching killed about 35 percent of the Great Barrier Reef. Researchers suggest prompt response.
