A top secret US military base has been located by Google Earth. It is spotted deep in the Nevada desert on the Yucca Flat. It is referred to as Area 6.
According to Las Vegas Review-Journal the complex is 12 miles away from Area 51 in Nevada. Conspiracy theorists are speculating what the US government is hiding in such a remote location. The journal found a little information about the secret military base from a website Flightglobal, an aviation industry website.
The base is run by the National Nuclear Security Administration. The US air base is kept under very low profile that even defence industry experts were unaware of it, stated news.com.au. Part of Area 6 is used to test unnamed aircrafts with sensors.
John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, said, “I had not heard about it”
A report was prepared by the Energy Department contractor Bechtel SAIC in 2008 for the Yucca Mountain repository license application.
It read, “The purpose of this facility is to construct, operate, and test a variety of unmanned aerial vehicles. Tests include, but are not limited to airframe modifications, sensor operation, and on board computer development. A small, manned chase plane is used to track the unmanned aerial vehicles.”
The aim of the agency is to build counter terrorism techniques, such as testing equipment with capabilities to detect radioactive materials. Terrorists use these materials to make destructive bombs. The site has a single runaway and a small complex of building subjugated by clamshell-door hangar and four smaller outbuildings connected by covered walkways. Antennas are installed, so that the ground operators can control unidentified aircraft.
Pike’s associate, imagery analyst Tim Brown noted that the length of the runaway hints that Area 6 is mostly used for small planes and remotely piloted aircraft like Predator and Reaper reconnaissance drones. He observed that the runaway is too small for large jets and bombers.
The aircraft used at the US military base are best for surveillance of hidden targets, weapons or personnel in the ground, especially in low population area, added Brown.
Recently, US was in talk with Australia in housing long-range heavy bombers in the country, an issue that might ignite tensions with China, according to reports.
