George Clooney was not misquoted this time. He was falsely quoted on a variety of issues in an exclusive by Hello! Magazine. The actor revealed his displeasure over the fabricated piece and said it is a very disturbing new trend.
It is not always that George Clooney gets annoyed, but Hello! magazine made sure it irked the actor by publishing a fake interview, an interview that was widely reprinted by others while crediting the publication. “Outlets like Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, The Sun, and The Evening Standard have all printed my exclusive interview and credited Hello! Magazine,” he said. “The problem is that I have not given an interview to Hello! magazine and the quotes attributed to me are not accurate,” he added.
The said interview includes a piece on Clooney talking about his marriage to Amal Clooney, states CNN. It quotes Clooney revealing that the couple has a rule whereby they are never apart for more than a week. However, the statements are false.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 54-year-old actor has revealed that no such interview ever took place. “The problem is that I have not given an interview to Hello! Magazine and the quotes attributed to me are not accurate,” said Clooney. “In my experience, being misquoted is not unusual but to have an ‘exclusive interview’ completely fabricated is something new. And a very disturbing trend,” he added.
The publication has expressed its dismay over Clooney’s statements. According to Sky News, Hello! editors purchased the ‘exclusive’ interview from an authentic agency, with whom they have dealt with for many years.
Variety explains that they have now established that the interview they purchased, was, in fact, a combination of old interviews and quotes made by the actor over a period of time. “Hello! Group bought the material in good faith from a trusted independent agent, who assured us it was an authentic one-to-one interview with Mr. Clooney, which we now accept was not the case,” revealed a statement made by the publication.
“We are shocked and disappointed to discover that the representations that were made to the Hello Group at the time of purchase of the material were not, in fact, true,” it added.
“We apologise unreservedly to Mr. Clooney and his wife Amal for any distress that publication of this piece may have caused them and further apologise for conveying the impression that he had given an exclusive interview to Hello!”
