“Game of Thrones” actor Finn Jones has been cast in the upcoming Netflix series, “Iron Fist.”
According to a press release on Marvel.com, “Jones will play Daniel Rand, who returns to New York City after being missing for years. He fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.”
Series executive producer and showrunner Scott Buck described Danny Rand as a very complicated character.
“He’s a billionaire New York Buddhist monk martial arts superhero who’s still trying to figure out what exactly that all means. Finn is able to play all these levels in such an honest, revelatory way that as soon as I saw him I knew he was our Danny,” said Buck.
Marvel also teased on Twitter an image for “Iron Fist.”
Marvel and Netflix received a bit of social media backlash when the rumours of Jones’ casting first came out. Fans believe that Marvel and Netflix should cast an Asian-American actor for the role since the Rand practices martial arts.
“Iron Fist” is the fourth series of Marvel and Netflix. “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones” both premiere on Netflix last year, while “Daredevil” season two is set to debut on Friday (March 18.) The third series, “Luke Cage,” will start streaming on September 30. It will star Mike Colter, who also appeared in “Jessica Jones.” USA Today noted that a fifth series, “The Defenders,” is also expected from Netflix and Marvel. The show will bring together heroes from the four other Marvel series. No date has been set for “The Defenders.”
Finn Jones will still reprise his role as Ser Loras Tyrell in “Game of Thrones” season six, which is set to premiere next month. The British actor is known for his work on the British series “Hollyoaks” and “Hollyoaks Later.”
