Emilia Clarke is the latest actress who’s expressed interest in giving the role of James Bond a feminine touch. Would this signal her exit from the “Game of Thrones?”
Although she’s busy promoting her latest film “Me Before You,” Clarke revealed her wish to take on the role of the famed fictional British spy, Daily Star reported.
“I would love to play Jane Bond,” Clarke told the publication. The actress remarked she had a lot of unrealized dreams, thus, this role could be one of them. However, her best response was yet to come as she revealed her ideal Bond boy. “My ultimate leading man would be Leonardo DiCaprio. No doubt about it,” Clarke added.
Her revelation comes on the heels of headlines that stated Daniel Craig would not return as 007. Craig reportedly turned down £68 million (approx. AU$138 million) for two more films in the franchise, Daily Star reported earlier. Speculations about his intention to let go of the role had spread early on. Thus, predictions about his replacement soon followed with names like Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, and recently, Jamie Bell.
The interesting thing about the prospect of a Jane Bond film is that it is yet to materialize. Clarke’s self-nomination is a follow-up to a fan casting that pitched “The X-Files” star Gillian Anderson as the female 007 agent, The Guardian noted. The publication cited an editorial by its film editor, Catherine Shoard, on how a female Bond would fare among fans.
“The campaign to make Bond female sits oddly with the vision of a world in which women leaders effect progress by adopting an approach not previously applied. Shouldn’t we be cooking up new heroines, rather than just sticking old ones in a frock?” Shoard wrote earlier. The fate of 007 lies in the hands of the franchise’s longtime producer, Barbara Broccoli, according to outgoing director Sam Mendes, Rolling Stone reported.
“It’s not a democracy … [longtime Bond producer] Barbara Broccoli decides who is going to be the next Bond, end of story,” Mendes said. However, he also suggested the final choice would be unexpected. Thus, Daenerys would be an ideal candidate for the new Bond, Vulture remarked.
