American comedian Dax Shepard has bravely revealed some of the darkest secrets of his life. The 41-year-old husband of Frozen 2 actor Kristen Bell opened up about the sexual abuse he suffered as a child. He strongly believes that it later led to his addiction issues.
A Part of Dax Shepard’s Interview Can be Heard Here:
Last week in an interview on The Jason Ellis Show on SiriusXM, explaining that he was molested by an 18-year-old neighbor when he was just 7 years old.
He told the host, “It was minimal.” The Michigan-born star has been candid in the past about being sexually assaulted by his own father. “It wasn’t anything like what you recounted. But even at that, it took me 12 years to tell anyone that.”
Shepard further came forward and admitted that those lonely 12 years of his life were filled with “insane thoughts,” he told the announcer. “I was like, a) it’s my fault, as generic as that is,” he said “and I’m gay, I must have manifested this because I’m secretly gay.”
The “Hit and Run” star has been open about his struggle with substance abuse and alcoholism. Shepard explained that his mother Laura LaBo helped him understand the link between his past and his struggle with addiction. LaBo works as a court-appointed advocate for foster kids, conveyed in Touch.
“If you’ve been molested, you only have a 20 percent chance of not being an addict,” he was told while being counseled by his mother. “And I was like, ‘Hmm, interesting,’ because in my mind, I just like to f**king have a great time. But when you hear a statistic like that, I’m like, ‘Oh no, I was going to be an addict. Period.’”
In fact, Shepard’s alcohol and drug addiction was so extreme that in 2012 he confessed to Playboy that he was fortunate enough not to land up in jail ever. “I just loved to get f**ked-up — drinking, cocaine, opiates, marijuana, diet pills, pain pills, everything. Mostly my love was Jack Daniel’s and cocaine,” he told.
