The CW has picked up the Riverdale series to complete its fall 2016 lineup. It will be helmed by Greg Berlanti, the creative genius behind The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. Here are five things we know so far about the highly-awaited live-action adaptation of the famous, long-running comic series Archie.
Who’s playing who?
Archie is played by K.J. Apa, who previously starred in New Zealand series Shortland Street. The bubbly and studious Betty Cooper is played by actress Lili Reinhart, whose most notable works include Surviving Jack and The Kings of Summer. Up-and-coming actress Camila Mendes landed the role of spoiled rich kid Veronica Lodge.
Perhaps one of the most recognizable Riverdale series cast members is Cole Sprouse, who became a favorite among Disney fans with his twin brother, Dylan, for their roles in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. The Riverdale series is Sprouse’s first television comeback since the last episode of The Suite Life on Deck went on air in 2011. Sprouse stars as Jughead Jones, one of Riverdale’s heartthrobs and Archie’s former best friend.
Student-teacher relationship in play
The show is set in the present time and the story is based on the lives of the Archie Comics characters. It is described as a “subversive take” on the source material. According to Slash Film, Archie Andrews is involved in a “forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel).” This indicates that the show will deviate a bit from the original comics, considering that Ms. Grundy is a lot older than her students and was previously married to Mr. Weatherbee, Riverdale High School’s principal.
The story goes back to the very beginning of things
The story will begin at the very start of the entire Archie Comics storyline. One of the core characters in the series, Veronica Lodge, is portrayed as the new student who “arrives from New York with her mother Hermione. She becomes best friends with Betty Cooper, who has a major crush on Archie, but is afraid to express her true feelings for him.” Interestingly, Betty in the TV series has a control freak mom who keeps her drugged up on Adderall to stay “focused.”
Riverdale = Twin Peaks?
The Riverdale series’ pilot episode was written by Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and is being likened to Twin Peaks. Much like David Lynch’s 90’s masterpiece, the Riverdale series will center on the story of a murder. Vanity Fair reports that the show will begin with the two “reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom.”
Jason Blossom has a twin sister, Cheryl Blossom, Riverdale’s resident queen bee. And like all queens bees in television, Cheryl hides a dark secret which the Riverdale gang will soon uncover.
Riverdale series release date
Although no exact release date has been confirmed, Riverdale is expected to premiere sometime in fall this year.
