Game of Thrones vs Captain America: Can Valyrian Steel Defeat Vibranium?

Game of Thrones

The Game of Thrones realm and the Marvel Cinematic Universe each boasts of fictional substances that have been regarded for their strength and power. Game of Thrones takes pride in the Valyrian steel while Marvel revels in the glory of Vibranium. In honor of the premiere of Captain America: Civil War and Game of Thrones Season 6, we seek to determine which of these two is the more indestructible weapon.

Valyrian steel was forged in the days of the Valyrian Freehold. Unfortunately, the secret to forging Valyrian steel was lost during the Doom of Valyria. Valyrian steel is now very rare, with only around 200 known weapons existing in Westeros.

Vibranium came to Earth some 10,000 years ago through a meteorite. It was first discovered during a human expedition to Antarctica. Another different variety of Vibranium was also discovered in the fictional country of Wakanda.

Valyrian steel is known to be very sharp and strong. Despite its durability, it’s also very lightweight. Weapons made of this metal do not lose its edge, and thus requires no further sharpening. It can be recognised by its distinctive rippled pattern and unusual dusky color, according to Wikia. Legend has it that Valyrian steel can only be forged with dragon fire since it is resistant to damage from normal fire. Also, it is infused with magical spells.

Vibranium is one of Marvel’s strongest materials, second only to Adamantium. Even so, it is very durable. Unlike Adamantium, Vibranium absorbs more impact and force, including sound waves, vibrations and kinetic energy. It can also release the same impact it absorbs. The only material that can cut through Vibranium is True Adamantium. It also possesses magnetic properties.

Popular usage

In Game of Thrones, Valyrian steel is commonly used to create weapons. However, it can also be forged into other high-value items, such as Aegon’s crown. The most popular Valyrian steel weapon is perhaps the ancestral greatsword Ice of House Stark. After Ned Stark’s death, it was reforged into two smaller swords: Oathkeeper and Widow’s Wail. Widow’s Wail is currently in the possession of Tommen Baratheon while Oathkeeper has been given to Brienne of Tarth. Valyrian steel is the one of the few known materials that can kill a White Walker.

Vibranium is a very versatile substance and can be used to create different things. But it is commonly associated with Captain America’s shield which is composed of Vibranium alloy. According to Stack Exchange, there are different variations of Captain America’s shield, the strongest being the one composed of an Adamantium-Vibranium mix. But even a Vibranium-only shield is so strong that it can withstand a hit from Thor’s Mjolnir and remain intact. Ultron’s body in the second The Avengers film was also made with Vibranium.

Game of Thrones and Captain America: Civil War are set in completely different fictional worlds, so it’s difficult to come up with a definite answer. But based on their characteristics and usage, Vibranium appears to be the stronger weapon. The fact that Captain America’s Vibranium shield can survive a hit from the hammer of a Norse god says a lot about its power. Even with Valyrian steel’s magic, it wouldn’t be able to penetrate through a Vibranium-based weapon, a substance considered to be nearly indestructible.

Captain America: Civil War premieres in theatres in Australia on May 6. Game of Thrones Season 6 airs on HBO every Sunday.
