“Fifty Shades Darker” has a new bad girl in town and it is none other than Oscar winner Kim Basinger. The actress will play the key role of Elena Lincoln, Christian Grey’s business partner and ex-lover.
Basinger’s character is also known as Mrs. Robinson, the older woman and former lover that initiated Christian Grey into the world of S&M.
The role of who would star as Mrs. Robinson had been at the centre of much speculation lately, with Sharon Stone and Catherine Zeta-Jones named as high contenders.
Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan will reprise their roles as Anastasia Steele and Grey, respectively, with James Foley taking over directing duties after Sam Taylor-Johnson left the series last year.
Luke Grimes, Eloise Mumford and Max Martini are also returning to the cast, with Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti producing along with James and Marcus Viscidi. Niall Leonard and James are penning the script.
Kim Basinger rose to fame when she starred in the sexy 1986 movie “9 ½ Weeks.” She is in the 1989 “Batman” as Vicki Vale, a gossip reporter. The actress is also in 2013’s “Grudge Match” with Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone. In 2014, she appeared in the indie films “The 11th Hour” and “4 Minute Mile.”
The 62-year-old also recently wrapped up work on another Los Angeles period piece, “The Nice Guys”, together with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.
Variety reports that Universal is planning to shoot “Fifty Shades Darker” and the final movie in the installment, “Fifty Shade Freed,” back-to-back, so it was important to lock down cast before production began on the sequel.
Author E.L. James confirmed on her Twitter account that production is set to start in the spring.
“Fifty Shades of Grey”, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, have grossed more than $560 million worldwide after its release last February.
“Fifty Shades Darker” is slated for a February 10, 2017 release.
