Gilas Pilipinas finished on top of the team standings after the second round of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship, following a convincing win against India yesterday.
The Philippine basketball team secured the top seed in Group E of the tournament after defeating India, 99-65.
India kept the game close in the first two quarters but eventually fell apart amid Gilas’ press in the final half, Philippine Star wrote.
The Filipinos went on a 24-0 run in the fourth quarter and further stretched the gap at 95-60. Gilas limited the Indians to only five points throughout the last seven minutes of the game.
Terrence Romeo scored 20 points. Five other Gilas players — Andray Blatche, Jayson Castro, Calvin Abueva, Ranidel de Ocampo and Marc Pingris – contributed double-digit outputs.
Gilas Pilipinas coach Tab Baldwin told Philippine Star, “This is where we wanted to be. Now, games will be tough, all opponents will be tough. We’ll have to prepare and get ready to bring everything together and work as a team.”
“We’re not as ready as we’d like to be, but the guys are responding, the ball movement is better, the condition is better,” he added.
Gilas will face Lebanon in the knockout stage that will begin tomorrow (Oct 1) at the Changsha Social Work College Gymnasium in China, GMA News reported.
Lebanon defeated Jordan, 80-76, on Tuesday to secure the No. 4 spot in Group F.
