Gilas Philippines is all set to face Japan in their semi-final match at FIBA Asia 2015 today. Topping the group charts and moving into the quarter finals against Lebanon, the Philippines side is fired up to get into the finals and face Supreme Iran or formidable China, whoever wins their match on this day.
Provoked by the “easy, easy” comment of the opposing coach in their quarter final clash against the Lebanese side, the Filipinos beat the Lebanese 82-70 to advance to the final four at Changsha Social Work College Gym.
Gilas’ naturalised center, Andray Blatche, reacting on the intriguing comment, said, “For us it was a sign of disrespect”, the Inquirer reports.
“We don’t treat our opponents that way he (Lebanese coach Veselin Matic) referred to us. You know what, it was playing them that was ‘easy.’”
Forming a formidable duo on the offensive side, Jayson Castro has been the main gunner for he Gilas Pilippinas and his partnership with Blatche has been rewarding for the side. Interaksyon notes that following his superb consistent performance in the FIBA Asia, the star guard, Castro, is a top choice for the Championship’s MVP award.
In one of his most impressive individual efforts, Blatche provided with three assists, three steals and two blocks contributing 24 points, while Jason scored the first 12 points of the team, finishing with 25 points.
Japan is a formidable side to beat. This will be an exciting re-encounter between Japan and Philippines after being Group E rivals.
With top players missing, no one expected Japan to reach so far. If they can limit Blatche’s production, they might be able to stop the mighty the Gilas.
