Jordan Clarkson will not be suiting up for Gilas Pilipinas for the FIBA Asia 2015 tournament this month, even amid reports that there was “clarity” in the Philippine authorities visit to Los Angeles Lakers executives.
FIBA Asia is set to kick off on September 23 and with deadline of final rosters set for today, the Philippine team was not able to accomplish all clearances needed for the Lakers sophomore to play for the country’s Basketball National Team.
“We did all that we could to have Jordan Clarkson join Gilas for the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship but we are saddened to report that we are not able to beat the deadline to secure the necessary clearances on time,” the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) confirmed in a statement, notes Rappler.
It was initially reported that the Lakers front office have already agreed to let Clarkson play for his home team in the upcoming FIBA Asia tournament in China. However, the team required the player to attend the team’s media day on Sept 28 and the training camp from the 29 to Oct 7. With this, Clarkson will have to miss most of the Gilas Pilipinas games and will only be able to suit for the first three games.
Notably, a report published by the Philippine Star on Sunday revealed that SBP delegation that visited the Lakers execs found “better clarity” on the issue.
“It’s still a work in progress but with better clarity,” SBP vice chairman Ricky Vargas said.
However, the recent update reveals the player will see none of the games for the Philippine team.
“Though the doors on the 2015 FIBA Asia meet have been closed, the future of the national team program is encouraging with Clarkson’s desire to represent flag and country,” the SBP noted in its statement.
“By this token, we will ask FIBA Asia to consider holding the tournament in the same manner as FIBA Americas, Europe, Oceania and Africa do, that is avoiding scheduling conflict with the calendar of the NBA.”
While Clarkson is out of the final roster, former NBA star Andray Blatche has been confirmed to represent the Philippines in the tournament as a naturalized Filipino.
FIBA Asia 2015 will be held on Sept 23 at Hunan, China.
