Back in the early years of Facebook, the majority of people who signed up take it to the largest social network and share things in a personal level. Things such as events, relationship updates and even birthday greetings were the norm back then.
However, as of late, most people recycle memes and cat images. But mostly, the platform has now been overrun by brands that use it as an advertising medium. Apparently, that has been the case since people are now sharing fewer personal updates as compared before.
According to a report from The Information, overall sharing has declined to 5.5 percent from the middle of 2014 to the middle of 2015. As such, Facebook has relatively fewer posts to sort and choose from for its users’ News Feeds.
However, as it turns out, Facebook users are now sharing far fewer updates in a personal level on the social network. According to the report, these kinds of post fell 21 percent during the same period. What’s more, it seems that the decline isn’t stopping. It’s continuing this year, although it comes at a much slower rate of 15 percent year over year.
Moreover, the report also notes that the largest social network has a dedicated team that is working on ways to ramp up its users in sharing more personal posts, and one of the ways includes boosting the position of a Facebook friend’s update post in a user’s News Feed.
The company has been making constant changes to the News Feed. We have been seeing live videos and posts that are seeing high interaction rates. Furthermore, personal updates appear more prominent in the News Feed, according to the report.
According to The Verge, Facebook downplayed the issue. “People continue to share a ton on Facebook; the overall level of sharing has remained not only strong, but similar to levels in prior years,” said Facebook in a comment to The Information.
