Nine Australian men have been arrested in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. They were were taken into custody by local authorities on Sunday, shortly after they stripped down to their underwear to celebrate countryman Daniel Ricciardo’s win in the Malaysian Grand Prix.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon at the Sepang Grand Prix circuit in KL. The nine Aussie men were described to be between the ages of 25-29 by a report from The Star.
When Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo took the chequered flag to claim the victory, they stripped down to their underwear, which were printed with the Malaysian flag. They also drank beer from their shoes, to copy Ricciardo’s podium ritual of drinking champagne from his boot. The offensive underwear is apparently being sold online by an Australian swimwear brand. The collection features designs bearing the flags of other nations.

The antics seemed funny at first, with several audience members taking photos and videos of the celebrations. However, it turns out that the Malaysian authorities were not amused. According to the New Straits Times, The men were arrested and charged with intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.
One of the men who was arrested apparently works in the staff of Defence Minister Christopher Pyne. The case involving the Australians is reportedly being handled by the Australian High Commission and they are being provided with all the necessary consular services and assistance.
The incident is the aftermath of an unexpected victory from the Australian driver. Through a series of unfortunate events for Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, Daniel Ricciardo found himself at the top step of the podium.
Rosberg spun out of the first corner from second place and ended up fighting his way up to third from all the way at the end of the grid. HAmilton, who led most of the race, had a dramatic engine blow out in the closing stages, which handed Ricciardo the victory.
