Melbourne Victory seems to be taking advantage of the new guest player rule of the A-League. They are on the brink of securing former Chelsea star Michael Essien. Eissen is among the high-profile overseas players Victory has on their radar as they are looking to bolster their team in the upcoming season.

Ghana international Essien became one of European football’s hottest properties after making his name at the French Club Lyon. Chelsea succeeded to sign him up and he became Stamford Bridge’s hottest player where he was part of two Premier League victories and one Champions League victory. His stints with Italy and Greece may have been marked by injury, but he is still a giant at the center of the field.

The former Chelsea legend left Greek Panathinaikos at the later part of the previous season and has been without a club since then. He is about to become Melbourne Victory’s second guest marquee. The first one being former Socceroos star Tim Cahill.

Victory previously had their eyes on Alessandro Diamanti. The FFA however turned down their marquee funds’ application. It seemed that the Italy International striker did not meet the criteria for the league to grant funding from its extensive funding pool.

David Gallop, chief executive of Football Federation Australia, confirmed that a request has been formally submitted to the body. The said request is for a fraction of the Marquee Guest Fund to be used for getting Essien into the A-League.

A spokesman for Melbourne Victory said that the club can confirm their plans to secure Michael Essien as the club’s full season guest marquee this year. The club has been making inquiries about getting the Chelsea midfielder into the squad.

Victory is reportedly deep in negotiations with the ex-Chelsea star and only personal terms have yet to be agreed upon. We expect to receive an advice from the club in case any additional details on this matter come up.
