European Space Agency Launches Sentinel-1B in Space


European Space Agency has advanced a new step in its space programme by launching it second satellite, Sentinel-1B into space. The satellite will function to foster Europe’s environmental Copernicus programme, by setting up strong radar vision.

The satellite set off from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, at 21:02 GMT (23:02 CEST). It separated 23mins and 35 seconds later from the rocket’s Fregat upper stage. It was launched on Soyuz rocket.

Sentinel-1B will conjointly work with Sentinel-1A, to monitor the environmental and geographical changes like icebergs, flood indication, land conditions and pollution level.

“The launch of Sentinel-1B marks another important milestone as this is the first constellation we have realised for Copernicus,” said ESA’s Director General Jan Woerner in a report by Spaceref.

“Orbiting 180 apart, the two satellites optimise coverage and data delivery for services that are making a step change in the way our environment is managed.”

The two satellites have a strong laser communication and well-programmed system to fetch information in any circumstances, irrespective of day and night. They can store up to five terabytes of information on earth per day, according to BBC.

Sentinel-1B has 12 m-long radar antenna and two 10 m-long solar wings, which were folded judiciously on the rocket during the launch. The solar wings and radar antenna have a set sequence to open which will take 10 hours in its setup.

The Satellite has taken its position in the orbit. A controllers’ team at ESA’s operations centre in Germany will take care of its functioning.

The new update in European Union’s space project will increase the techniques of data collection with strong accuracy. Million has already spent in this programme.

“With Sentinel-1B in orbit we will receive double the amount of data and achieve global coverage in six days,” said Volker Liebig, ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes.

“This is the fourth satellite that we’ve launched for Copernicus in just two years and this launch is certainly a special moment because it completes the Sentinel-1 constellation.”
