Manchester United will be looking to put pressure on the top four when they face Stoke City at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Van Gaal’s side suffered a shocking defeat against Southampton last game week after debutante Charlie Austin scored a last gasp winner. That loss came after a five game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

United, however come to this game after an impressive win over Derby County in the FA Cup where Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata got themselves on the score sheet. Michael Carrick came off the bench, but he will be looking to make a start against Southampton.

“I’m not a stupid man. I’m an intelligent man and I cannot predict the atmosphere on Tuesday. I hope that we can give the same level of performance as against Derby,” Van Gaal told BBC before the game. have also confirmed that Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo are all out after operations.

Stoke City come to this game after losing out to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup last Saturday. Mark Hughes’ side have also lost their last two away games in the English Premier League.

Stoke can be positive going into this game after their impressive 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Boxing Day, but they have since lost their way in the premier league.

Stoke will be without Marc Wilson, who has suffered a knee injury, while captain Ryan Shawcross and Charlie Adam are all unavailable for the game. Despite this, Hughes was quoted in saying:

“It’s a big game on Tuesday, obviously. We can affect them and help ourselves so we’ll try to do that. I think everyone’s interest and focus on the league is as high as it’s ever been just because of the different teams that are getting involved.”
