For those who are still rocking a 16GB iPhone, the struggle of paltry onboard storage, a few apps, and a small number of playlists is simply widespread. Since Apple will never plan on equipping its iPhones with microSD card slots for expanded storage, there’s just no room for options. While there are certain workarounds including a USB On-the-Go (OTG) devices that can back-up your iPhone’s data in a few clicks, most of them are expensive. Fortuantely, a Reddit user has found a neat, new trick to free up your iPhone’s storage to keep it running in tip top shape.
The trick was shared by a Reddit user who goes by the name of “eavesdroppingyou.” “I have an iPhone with 16GB so I’m always dealing with low storage. A trick I do to get back some storage is to try to ‘rent’ a movie with a big file size,” wrote the user.
In order for the trick to work, users must attempt to rent a movie from iTunes that must be larger than the free space their devices currently have. The Reddit user advises “Lord of the Rings: Two Towers” since it’s a feature film with a long running time, which would also indicate that bigger file size it has.
Users will then get a message that states their devices don’t have enough storage to download the film, and it will even offer to take you to the Settings app. After clicking it, you will then see some storage back to your device. Repeat the process a couple of times until you recover every free storage space that you can get.
According to reports, the trick works by making the iPhone clean installed apps to remove things such as data, internet history, as well as cookies that are no longer needed by your devices. Most users claim that they retrieve 2GB to 4GB of free storage space, which is still a lot even in this day and age.
