There’s a new companion for the Doctor in the long-running hit BBC series Doctor Who, played by up-and-coming British actress Pearl Mackie. She will join Peter Capaldi, the twelfth Doctor, when the show returns with a new season in 2017.
Peal Mackie’s character, Bill, replaces the Doctor’s previous assistant Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Colman. Bill’s first encounter with a Dalek is featured in a brief Doctor Who clip. The character is rather gutsy and inquisitive at the same time. In just one sitting, Bill already wants to know what a Dalek is and why they keep saying “exterminate” when it would’ve been easier to just say “kill.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 28-year-old actress graduated from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 2010. She currently performs in the West End production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night. This is not her first time on screen as she previously appeared in BBC’s The Doctors and the 2013 film Svengali.
Mackie shared her excitement with the role, which she describes as “cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in,” The Independent reports.
“It’s such an extraordinary British institution. I couldn’t be prouder to call the Tardis my home. I always loved stage combat at drama school so I can’t wait to get on set and kick some evil monsters into the next dimension!” Mackie said enthusiastically.
Peter Capaldi also welcomed Mackie to the Doctor Who family, calling her a “fine, fine actress with a wonderful zest and charm.”

“She’s a refreshing addition to the Tardis and will bring a universe of exciting new possibilities to The Doctor’s adventures,” Capaldi added.
Capaldi, Mackie and the rest of the gang will begin filming the next Doctor Who season next month. It will be Steven Moffat’s last as showrunner.
