Whovians, the so-called fans of “Doctor Who,” will surely have a fun Christmas treat this season of cheers. Just like other hit TV shows, the British Science-fiction television show will air a Christmas Special episode.
According to TV Tonight, the Christmas Special of “Doctor Who” Season 9 will air on Saturday, December 26, at 7:30pm. The one-hour special episode is entitled “The Husbands of River Song.” In this episode, the site mentioned that Alex Kingston will star as River Song.
The official synopsis reads,
“It’s Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas Carols and Comedy Antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy. King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) is furious, and his giant Robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole (Matt Lucas) survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is?
All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time.”
Speaking to Radio Times, “Doctor Who” writer/producer Steven Moffat shared details about bringing River Song back to the show. Moffat revealed that after losing Clara, he didn’t want to get the Doctor a new companion instantly.
“So, I’ll be honest, I brought River Song back in because I thought there’s a possibility I’d never write it [Doctor Who] again so that’ll be my goodbye. But also I really fancied it. I hadn’t written River for a couple of years and I’d always loved writing for her and I’d missed her. I thought, given that I’m knackered at the end of a series, what would be a treat for me would be getting Alex Kingston back onto Doctor Who.”
According to Moffat, the Christmas special will be “a great romp” for Christmas day. He mentioned that long-term Whovians will witness “a lot of talk about the Doctor and River’s glory years” in the special episode.
