It was quite the happy ending for the military-themed Korean drama series Descendants of the Sun. In the show’s finale, which aired April 14, everyone had their happy ending. That includes the show’s lead couple Yoo Si Jin (Song Joong Ki) and Kang Mo Yeon (Song Hye Kyo)

Fans were relieved that no one got killed off in the show’s finale, contrary to rumors that either Yoo Si Jin or Seo Dae Young might die in battle. Descendants of the Sun writer Kim Eun Sook also kept her promise of not ruining the show’s ending.

In episode 16, Yoo Si Jin and Kang Mo Yeon reunite after a year. At the time they were separated, Yoo Si Jin was sent off to a far-off mission where he was thought to have died. Kang Mo Yeon sees him again in Daniel Spencer and Ri Ye Hwa’s wedding.

After the wedding, the couple visits the beach in Uruk where they spent one of their memorable dates. They express their love for each other, promise to marry and share a passionate kiss.

According to The Korea Herald, the Descendants of the Sun finale scored a 38.8 percent nationwide viewership rating as per data from Nielsen Korea. It is the show’s highest rating yet.

Despite massive public demand, any prospect of a second season run is off the table.

“Season 2 would be nice, but I don’t know about its possibility,” Descendants of the Sun producer Lee Eung Bok told Yonhap News. “We’d have to keep all the main cast, whose schedules won’t be easy to coordinate. We’d also need the two writers again, and that might be hard.”

However, fans can look forward to the three-part Descendants of the Sun special, which will air form April 20 to 22, Soompi reports.
