‘Live With Kelly’: Derek Hough to Replace Michael Strahan?

After Michael Strahan spent four years sitting beside Kelly Ripa on “LIVE! With Kelly and Michael,” it’s time to find a new co-host for Ripa and Derek Hough is willing to take that opportunity.

“Derek wants to branch out from his ‘Dancing With The Stars’ fame and do something different,” the source told Hollywood Life. “And since he has ties with many at ABC, he is throwing himself into the running for ‘Live’ and would love to have a chance with co-hosting.”

This is something really new for Hough but he is ready to try something different and to be known more than just that guy who dances really well in “Dancing With The Stars.”

“He knows it’s a leap, but all he wants is a chance to prove that he would be great,” the source added.

In 2012, Michael Strahan was nabbed to co-host Live! after a 10-month search for a replacement for Regis Philbin.

Aside from his co-hosting job with Ripa, Michael Strahan also joined the GMA team twice a week but he chose to do it full time now and so he has to drop the Live! show.

Michael Strahan pulled Ripa and Executive Producer Michael Gelman aside at 10:30 to inform them that he would be leaving Live for GMA, sources connected with the production of the show told TMZ. The insiders mentioned that both Ripa and Gelman were “stunned and upset” by the news.

CNN reported that GMA hoped that the presence of Michael Strahan will help reverse its rating’s slide.

In 2012, the morning show overtook “Today” in total viewers after a 16-year streak, but Today recently reclaimed the lead.

Strahan’s departure leaves behind a hosting vacancy at Live. The show is expected to conduct on-air tryouts this fall to find a replacement, just as it did when Michael Strahan took over for Philbin and Ripa replaced Kathie Lee Gifford in 2001.
