Australia’s upcoming Defence White Paper will be significant in resetting the relations between the government and the defence industries. This was stated by Defence Minister Marise Payne while opening the new facility of Canberra-based CEA Technologies. She said the White Paper and the ancillary Defence Industry Policy Statement will deliver a central role to Australian defence industries.

The government will be publishing the White Paper later in 2016.  It will replace the existing document of 2013, reports Janes Weekly.  “The new policy documents will not only outline the key part Australian industry can play in research, innovation and development, they will also reset the relationship between industry and defence as we move to an environment where industry truly is considered a fundamental input to capability,” Payne said.

Meanwhile, the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) has criticised the Australian Department of Defence (DOD) for its handling of various support and skill development programmes. It said DOD displays a lack of co-ordination in the effective monitoring of these programmes, still on the reports from Janes Weekly.

The support and skills programmes are part the Defence Industry Policy Statement (DIPS) put out in 2010. It advocates an industrial development policy in line with the emerging strategic requirements. The DIPS offers a funding of AU$445.7 million (US$315 million) to run 19 industry support programmes until 2019. But ANAO said it could only see 11 programmes.

Meanwhile, Defence Housing Australia is making a focus-shift towards the development of apartments. It already made a successful foray into Sydney’s Lindfield.

Defence Housing Australia was mostly into building townhouses and houses. Its recently completed Crimson Hill development with only nine apartments left for sale. It had put 310 apartments in the market. The Crimson Hill project of the DHA is high up on a plateau. DHA acting managing director Jan Mason said DHA development offered “a new way of living.”

“Crimson Hill was our first foray into the apartment market. We are glad buyers have wanted to be a part of this unique project,” he said.

According to Colliers International director of projects, Curtis Field, the apartments carry many attractions such as proximity to the Lane Cove National Park and has many schools, cafes and shops in the vicinity, reports Domain Australia.

The DHA’s new apartments under construction include a 166-unit development in Perth’s Fremantle. It is also planning some new developments in Sydney’s Waterloo and Alexandria.
