‘Dark Souls 3’ Review Roundup

From Software’s Action RPG masterpiece is back again for its fourth Souls game (the first was Demon Souls for the PlayStation 3) and it seems that there are no signs of slowing down for the “Dark Souls 3” hype. But is “Dark Souls 3” better than its predecessors?

GameSpot managed to compile reviews from other gaming websites and critics to see if the newest “Dark Souls” game live up to the promise from the rest of the Souls games.

Check out what some of the critics has to say about the third “Dark Souls” game.

GameSpot 8 out of 10

Much like From Software’s earlier entries, “Dark Souls 3” obscures its plot beneath its gameplay elements—the story is more concerned with tone than exposition. But with that plot, there are important questions: Why do we place our idols in such high regard? How did they become our legends? The Lords of Cinder are imposing figures in “Dark Souls 3,” and their power is attractive to pawns like us. But the end of their road is a lonely one; was that destination worth the sacrifice it took to get there?

IGN 9.5 out of 10

If “Dark Souls 3” truly is the last in the series as we know it, then it’s a worthy send-off. Weapon arts allow stylish and versatile new moves without tarnishing the purity of the combat system. Lothric’s awe-inspiring locations provide visually stunning arenas for rigorous exploration and fierce face-offs with hosts of deadly enemies and even deadlier bosses. While not all the risky changes land as neatly as others, “Dark Souls 3” is a powerful journey and the sequel the series truly deserves.

Destructoid 8.5 out of 10

If “Dark Souls 3” truly is the last game for now, it makes perfect sense, since it’s just as much of a love letter to fans as it is a culmination of the series. I may not have liked this iteration as much as the rest, but it’s still streets ahead of most current action games and deserves a warm spot on your shelf by the bonfire.

Any player who’s been through this mill is prepared to die, but once more, that fantastic beacon of hope urging players to press forward and overcome each obstacle is shining as bright as ever. Because that’s what Dark Souls is all about – perishing, persevering, and prevailing.

No game series comes close to doing what “Dark Souls” does, and “Dark Souls 3”  has done it again. It’s an undead favorite.

“Dark Souls 3” will be available on April 12 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
