Messi Injured, Replaced by Gaitan

Argentina’s superstar Lionel Messi reportedly has not recovered in time to start Argentina’s Copa America opener against Chile.

Messi sustained his injury last May during Argentina’s friendly game against Honduras. His rehabilitation was also interrupted as he has to come back to Barcelona court in relation to the charges of tax fraud filed against him.

The football star is still in pain following the blow to his back. He will be replaced by Nicolas Gaitan in this opening match, Goal.com reports.

Should Argentina Worry?

There is no cause for worry just yet for Argentinian fans out there despite Messi missing the first match as the team’s bench has enough players who can capably inflict damage to Chile, according to Hollywood Life.

This includes Erik Lamela, 24, Sergio Aguero, 28, Ezequiel Lavezzi, 31, and Ever Banega, 27.

Chile Squad Equally Capable

The Chile team, meanwhile, has a roster of football stars who are equally capable of overcoming the powerful Argentina’s Messi-less squad.

This includes star players Alexis Sanchez, 27, of Arsenal and Arturo Vidal, 29, of Bayern Munich.

Chile is also the defending Copa America 2015 champion.
