Candace Payne didn’t count on breaking a record that fateful day. The stay-at-home mum simply went on an errand to buy herself yoga pants. Fortunately, her side trip to the toy section led to a viral video that has millions of viewers laughing with the “Chewbacca Mum.”
Candace Payne appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America” to reveal the story behind the mask, The Detroit News reported. As of writing, Payne’s Facebook live video counts 138,749,578 views. It’s likely the numbers will continue to grow given her “infectious laugh,” the publication described.
Although her search for yoga pants didn’t pan out, she opted to buy her kids a toy. As it turns out, the mother of two is a “Star Wars” superfan, Us Weekly wrote. Payne explained how she came across the Chewbacca mask. However, from her story, would it seem that the mask found her?
“I had seen this before, but I didn’t realise it made a sound until that moment. It accidentally started making the growl, and I went, ‘I need to get that.’ Like, I don’t think my kids need that, I think I need that,’” Payne revealed. The fun began when she got into the car and felt the mask calling out to her.
“I was thinking, ‘I’ve got 30 minutes before I have to be responsible and pick up my children from school and once they see this I’ll never get to see it again.’ So I thought, I’m going to share this with my Facebook friends and family, and if anybody wants to see it, they’re going to have to see it now,” Payne told GMA host Robin Roberts.
Her decision to put it on and assume the role of “Chewbacca Mum” resulted in an epic viral video that’s brought happiness to so many people. Payne jokingly said she felt a gold medal was in order given the record she’s broken for the most-watched Facebook Live video ever. Regardless, the “Chewbacca Mum” said the opportunity to “share joy with people” has been the best part of all this.
