Real Madrid will travel to Rome to set up the first leg encounter in their Champions League round 16 campaign against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday, February 17, starting 7:45 PM GMT. The game will air live on BT Sport Europe channel.
As per the Telegraph reports, the last time the two teams met was eight years ago. Roma stunned Real Madrid 2-1 with both away and home win.
Despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s terrific run in the season, Roma manager Luciano Spalletti is not planning to “cage” the ace Portuguese.
“I’m not going to order three players to mark him,” said Spalletti. “I don’t want to say that my players have one third of Ronaldo’s quality. If so, we’d need 33 players to deal with him.”
Roma won just one game in the group stages. They were thumped by Barcelona 6-1 which is quite a contrast to Madrid’s performance. Madrid won the last five of their six outings, scoring 19-goals in the process.
When Spalletti was asked about his chances he stated, “I don’t think there’s a favourite.”
“We’ve got a 50% chance of going through. I’m very optimistic, as I’ve seen my players improving all the time. I wouldn’t be amazed if it was my team who went through,” he added.
Gareth Bale has been sidelined due to knee injury while Ronaldo and Karim Benzema will start the proceedings for Madrid.
The Real Madrid coach is looking forward to his first Champions League encounter as a manager.
In the first of round 16 encounter, yesterday, Paris Saint Germain beat Chelsea 2-1 to take the lead.
