CAT S60: World’s First Smartphone With Built-In Thermal Camera

Cat Smartphone

The brand name of “Cat” has always been associated with heavy duty equipment and industrial machinery. Over the years, the company has also invested in the handset business and has already established a strong portfolio of highly durable feature phones and Android-powered devices. At the Mobile World Congress 2016, the company has officially unveiled its S60 – the world’s first smartphone that comes with a built-in thermal camera.

At first glance, you can easily tell that the thermal camera is the crowning glory of the S60, which radically changes the design and form factor of the device itself. Made by FLIR, the thermal camera allows users to capture and record live thermal images as well as measure the temperatures of a surface. It can even be used to get around and walk in total darkness. At the moment, however, the resolution of the images are still limited to VGA (640 x 480).

Other uses also include detecting loss of heat around windows or doors or spotting missing insulation as well as moisture. It can even see through smoke, thus allowing firefighters to see survivors during fires. Based on its actual uses and target market, the S60 is a niche device at the moment.

As far as the specifications go, the S60 is by no means a slouch. It comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 chipset with an octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Its display is a 4.7 inch HD capacitive multi-touch with auto wet finger & glove support, making it perfect for outdoor and heavy use. It also comes with a beefy 3,800 mAh battery. It’s currently running Android Marshmallow to keep you up to speed. Aside from its thermal camera, the S60 also comes with a 13MP primary snapper with dual flash and a 5MP selfie shooter at the front.

Similar to other devices in Cat’s lineup, the S60 also features quite a rugged build. It comes with MIL Spec 810G rating, allowing the device to survive drops of up to 1.8 metres. It’s also dustproof and waterproof to boot.

The Cat S60 will be available later this year with a suggested retail price of AU$836 (US$599), which is actually a very reasonable price considering the features that come with it.
