The Billboard Music Awards 2016 is the first major music event to take place after the shocking death of Prince. The event is also in the middle of a tribute controversy. Prince fans are against Madonna being the only star paying a tribute to the late artist but the producers are defending their choice.
The Billboard Music Awards 2016 is scheduled to take place this Sunday, May 22. The event will feature Madonna paying tribute to Prince. Prince’s fans are questioning the decision on why she should be the only person doing the job. But the producers are not ready to listen and have put it all down to individual opinions.
Prince’s fans are so annoyed that a Change.org petition entitled “Stop Madonna from being the only artist tributing Prince during the Billboard Awards” has received more than 8,000 signatures as we speak. Stacey Flygirrl Wilson, who started the petition with a single signature, is fast approaching the 10,000 target. “We cannot let Madonna be the main and only artist tributing Prince during the 2016 Billboard Awards,” says the petition. “He is more than worthy of a better choice as a main performer,” it adds.
According to Billboard, Prince fans opine that there are other musicians in addition to Madonna who were closely associated with the icon. Fans feel that those artists should also get an opportunity. There are even others who have brought the race thing into focus, saying that a black artist should be involved in a tribute to The Purple One.
However, producers are standing their ground. “Listen, I think everybody is entitled to their opinion and everyone can have their own opinion,” said Mark Bracco, executive producer of the awards ceremony. “But I will say that we are honoured and could not be more excited for Madonna to be on the show and to pay tribute to someone that was her friend and her peer and her colleague,” he added.
News.com.au explains that media personality Wendy Williams too showed her support to the Diva’s tribute act. “Oh really Prince people? Who do you think is worthy?” she asked. “There are three people in the trinity of greatness in music as far as pop stars that are age appropriate … and two of them are dead: Michael, Prince, and Madonna. That’s it!” she added.
