The “Beauty and the Beast” trailer is out and fans are loving it. Emma Watson has been dubbed a perfect Belle. But guess what? Fans think Ewan McGregor’s fake French accent is horrible.
Fans have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment over McGregor’s fake French accent. However, the star had admitted to failing miserably at it almost year ago. Now, it seems that the producers might be at fault for keeping it in the film.
McGregor, who plays Lumiere, already revealed his incapability of speaking like a French man in an old interview. According to NME, he was a guest on “The Graham Norton Show” in June 2015 when he first admitted his French accent failure.
“I’m married to a French woman more than 20 years and I thought ‘yeah I can do the French accent.’ But I got there and I couldn’t,” he explained on the show, “And there were so many people there …” He elaborated that the makers warned him to not use the guttural French ‘r.’ However, without it, the accent ended up sounding a bit Mexican.
But fans are having none of it. “Today I learned two things: 1. Disney is making a live-action ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ 2. Ewan McGregor has the worst French accent of all time,” wrote Twitter user Sarah Shay. “After watching the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ teaser countless times. I have to say … I really hate Ewan McGregor’s ‘French’ accent,” added Twitter user Patrick Dougall.
The “Beauty and the Beast” trailer premiered during “Good Morning America.” It has been widely appreciated by viewers. According to Polygon, it has already overtaken “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in terms of YouTube views in the first 24 hours of release. The publication states that the “Beauty and the Beast” trailer secured 91.8 million views in the 24 hours of its launch while the second “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” teaser trailer got 88 million views.
