The Palos Hills gang is growing up. Adulting can be difficult, but it seems that Jenna, Matty, and the rest of the gang are more than ready to face the challenges of the real world in Awkward Season 6.

In the Season 5 finale of Awkward, Jenna (Ashley Rickards) and Matty (Beau Mirchoff) meet in the closet where their romance started. This time, a more mature Matty faced Jenna. He tells her that although he wants to be with her so bad, he understands that Jenna should always choose what’s best for her so she allows her to return to Wyckoff.

“When we thought about bringing this season to a close, we really wanted to end this chapter of the Jenna and Matty story on a moment that would really satisfy what has been the ongoing arc of will they or won’t they,” executive producer Mike Chessler told Entertainment Weekly about the finale.

The Awkward Season 5 wrapper was a closure of sorts for the other characters as well. Sadie (Molly Tarlov) finally gets her moment of awakening after getting called out by Matty for her bad behaviour and then getting into an accident. Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed) slows down after living too much of her life in the fast lane. She’s facing a huge debt, and instead of relying on an easy way out, she bravely faces her responsibilities on her own. The happy-go-lucky Jake (Brett Davern) finally finds a direction in his life, and he has set his sights on New York City.

Although the events in the finale make it seem that this could be the show’s final run, executive producer Chris Alberghini is confident that Awkward Season 6 will happen. Speaking to TV Line, Alberghini says that while the fate of the show ultimately rests in the hands of MTV, the cast, and crew who want to return for another season.

“We’d jump ahead in time again, and there have been conversations about having it in a different city with a different feel,” Alberghini reveals. “The reason I said this episode is the close of one chapter is because, if there were to be another chapter, it would be a very different phase of [the characters’ lives].”
