Hawkeye doesn’t really get much love from Marvel fans. Or at least, he tends to get less attention than his fellow Avengers. He’s funny and endearing as a character, yes. But his skill set often looks tame compared to his other teammates’ powers. Does Jeremy Renner secretly feel cheated because of this? Does he actually dislike his character as well? Did the actor really convince producers to kill his character off in the upcoming Avengers 3 movie?

Avengers: Infinity War won’t drop for another two years. The studio has yet to confirm if they’re willing to kill off Hawkeye soon. The actor would be foolish to drop a spoiler like that, and he knows it. However, Renner did admit he did spend his first year with Marvel trying to convince producers to kill him off.

In an interview with Collider, the actor admitted he didn’t particularly like his story arc for the first Avengers movie.

“I was just getting to know who Hawkeye was, and then zap, I go [around] like a zombie. I’m like Loki’s minion,” he explained. “So I just had a heart attack in every scene. I’d just be walking with… Scarlett Johansson, and just like be ugh. And they said, ‘what are you doing man?’ ‘I’m giving you an option, if you just want to kick me out of this movie. Just you know, at any given moment, if you wanna kill me off, daddy’s gonna be having a heart attack.'”

The actor doesn’t want Hawkeye to die onscreen anytime soon, though, since he’s gotten to explore him “a lot” throughout the years. However, Renner did tell Collider that the upcoming movies will include “great deaths.”

Renner has played a significant part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the first Avengers in 2012. Unlike some of his teammates, his character has never had a standalone film.

However, fans can still catch him soon when the Avengers 3 movie hits the big screen in 2018.
