Some Marvel fans have been clamoring for a gay Avenger for a while now. Will the film studio finally listen? Will a same-sex subplot really be included in the upcoming “Avengers 3” movie?
Fans shouldn’t hold their breath on this one just yet. Marvel has yet to welcome an LGBT character to their cinematic universe. However, according to Comic Book Resources, the company has recently introduced a gay angle to their game, “Marvel Avengers Academy.”
One comic book character players can recruit in the game is Union Jack. The game reveals that this popular British superhero is actually gay. Union Jack himself would admit to this fact.”No offense, but you’re not my type,” he tells Black Widow during the game. “I’m telling you I’m gay.”
Meanwhile, according to MTV.com, “Avengers” co-director Joe Russo recently addressed rumors that Captain America and Bucky Barnes have been in a secret relationship in the movies all this time. “People have interpreted that relationship all kinds of ways,” Russo said. “For us, we’ve always interpreted the relationship as two brothers… They’re very close characters. They have a relationship with each other that is very deep.”
“These are both characters that came from nothing,” he added. “The bonds between the characters are very strong. That’s what motivates the storytelling.”
However, the director did say their fans are open to interpret their movies however they see fit. “People can interpret the relationship however they want to interpret it,” he explained. “It’s great to see people argue about it what that relationship means to them…We will never define it as filmmakers, explicitly.”
Will the Russo brothers ever include gay characters to their future Marvel movies? Fans might have to wait for “Avengers 3” to be released to find out. Part 1 of “Avengers: Infinity War” is set to hit the big screen on May 4, 2018.
