A young Australian goalkeeper, Stefan Petrovski, has died in a hospital after he was struck by lightning during a training session in Malaysia last month. The 18-year-old athlete immediately brought to the hospital in Malacca. He was placed in the intensive care unit of a hospital after the lightning accident on April 5.
It was initially reported that the Australian goalkeeper was knocked unconscious, as he was leaving a training session. When he was rushed to the emergency ward of Putra Specialist Hospital, he was actually in a stable condition although he was breathing with the support of a ventilator. Patrovski had survived a heart attack and shown signs of recovery, but recently his condition started deteriorating, The Guardian stated .
In the reports, scans revealed that he was suffering from Cerebral Hypoxia-Ischemia, caused by lack of oxygen supply to the brain. He had also developed severe cerebral edema, a swelling of the brain.
Khairi Anuar Ahmad, the club’s vice president of Melaka United, said, “I was shocked when I was told of the news by the assistant to the association’s team manager Datuk Yusof Mahadi.”
“He was a dedicated goalkeeper and boasted that he wanted to be the best goalkeeper in the country. He was very jovial, a good boy, liked by his team-mates and always wanted to be better,” he further stated.
Twenty-one-year-old Muhd Afiq Azuan, his teammate who was also struck by the same lightning, has regained consciousness. His condition is reported as stable, as stated by stuff.co.nz.
The Australian goalkeeper, Petrovski is of a mixed Serbian and Malaysian decent and he began his career at NPL side Sydney Olympic. Petrovski had recently moved to Malaysia and signed a three-year-contract with Melaka United after getting the Malaysian passport.
He had not made his league debut for the club. The social media platforms are flooded with tributes to Petrovski from the Australian and Malaysian football community.
Sydney Olympic FC in its tweet said, “It is with great sadness that we advise our Olympic son Stefan Petrovski has passed away. RIP.”
