The end of  Vampire Diaries Season 8 is near but it looks like vampire roles will not end just yet for actors Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley.

The two were reportedly among the frontrunners for Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles on television, iTechPost reported. Somerhalder and Wesley played the Salvatore brothers in the CW vampire series for the past eight years. Season 8 is the final installment for TVD and its finale will air in March 2017.

There are several other vampire TV series that are set to conclude in 2017 aside from the Vampire Diaries Season 8.  The Strain on FX will air its finale in 2017. There are also rumors that TVD spinoff, The Originals, is also in its final season. All of these will give way for new vampire series on the small screen, Variety noted.

Rice earlier confirmed on her Facebook post that The Vampire Chronicles series is coming on small screens soon. However, the renowned author made it clear that the project is still in the early stages of production. Rice said she along with her son, Christopher, still needs to complete the script and look for producers for the TV series. She added that the TV adaptation will begin with The Vampire Lestat.

The Vampire Chronicles’ theatrical rights were first held by Warner Bros.  In 2014, it was later sold to Universal Studios. Now, Rice has obtained the full theatrical rights and said, “Television is where the vampires belong.”

Two movies were made based on Rice’s series, namely, Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles in 1984 with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as Lestat and Louis, respectively, and Queen of the Damned with Stuart Townsend as Lestat. Singer Aaliyah was also in the 2002 movie.

“Over the years you all have told me how much you want to see a ‘Game of Thrones’ style faithful rendering of this material, and how much you want for the series to remain in my control. Well, I have heard you,” Rice wrote on FB.

The Vampire Chronicles is a series of novels that revolve around the fictional character Lestat de Lioncourt in the late 18th century to the late 1980s. Lestat is a French nobleman who turned into a vampire.
