Ridley Scott is deep into filming the Alien: Covenant, which is the sequel to Prometheus, as shown by the leaked photos on the set in Sydney, Australia.
The images were published on Daily Mail showing a rather apocalyptic environment that would hopefully further explain the mystery behind the Engineers introduced in the 2012 film.
Some of the photos show humanoids seemingly burned down to the ground, like a sudden explosion, forever frozen in time. They are reminiscent of the bodies left behind in Pompeii. In another image, there seems to be a corpse of a giant muscular monster while a humanoid is being attacked.
The synopsis for Alien: Covenant, as shared by Slash Film, reveals that it will have a direct link to the 1979 film starring Sigourney Weaver. The Covenant here refers to the ship which lands in what seemed to be a paradise. The thread that connects this film to Prometheus is the android David, played by Michael Fassbender.
Fans will remember that the head of David and Noomi Rapace’s character were the only ones to survive the first carnage. They then set off to uncharted galaxies in order to solve the mystery of the Engineers and how they figure out in the birth of humanity.
Ridley Scott talked to Empire where he explained that the change in the title, as opposed to the initial Prometheus 2, was decided long before.
“In a way, it is Prometheus 2. It’s exactly the same story,” he said. “But it was always in the works to be called that [Alien: Paradise Lost]. Is Prometheus actually taking us off course from where I’m going, which is actually backing into the first Alien.”
Scott also said that in Alien: Covenant, he will introduce the connection to Ripley (Sigourney Weaver). After the film, Neil Blomkamp’s still untitled Alien film will come out and which will seek to continue the tale following the events of Alien 2.
